Asparagus Pastry Straws

1 package (397g) frozen puff pastry, thawed
1 package (300 g) Europe’s Best® Asparagus Spears
1 egg
1 tbsp (15 mL) Dijon mustard
1 garlic clove, minced
1/3 cup (75 mL) Parmesan cheese, grated
4 tsp (20 mL) sesame seeds
1 tsp (5 mL) cracked black pepper
One pinch Cayenne pepper (optional)

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Divide puff pastry into 2 squares. Roll out each square, on a lightly floured surface, into a 6 x 12-inch (15 cm x 30 cm) rectangle.
  3. Beat egg with mustard and garlic; brush evenly over the top of each rectangle. Discard any excess.
  4. Toss Parmesan with sesame seeds, pepper, salt and cayenne (if using); sprinkle evenly over pastry pressing Parmesan mixture lightly into the pastry to adhere. Cut each sheet into 12 equal strips.
  5. Wrap one strip of pastry, seasoned-side-out, around each frozen asparagus spear, leaving the top and bottom exposed. Arrange on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
  6. Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes or until lightly browned and puffed. Cool slightly. Serve warm or at room temperature.
